The Axarquia Region
The area known as the Axarquia (whose Arabic name as-sharq means “east”), is located in the eastern part of the province of Malaga. Its wide geographical and climatic variety offers the visitors the chance to enjoy beaches, cliffs, mountains and valleys in its scarcely 1000 square kilometres.
Its enviable tropical climate, the surrounding mountain range and the proximity of the sea are contributory factors to the stable temperatures during the whole year
In the last years the tourism has involved a revolution but the region tries to preserve its identity characterized by villages standing on the sides of the mountains, with whitewashed houses and narrow winding streets usually with very steep slopes.
As to the gastromony, there are two different areas: the coastal villages, with fried fish and sardine skewers (espetos) and the inland villages, where cool tomato soup called gazpacho, migas (breadcrumbs fried in garlic), ajoblanco (cold garlic cream with almonds), sopas cachhorrenas (soup made with garlic, paprika and vinegar) and stews are typical, all them washed down with the local wine and oil.
Very interesting are some celebrations such as the Easter processions, pilgrimages to hermitages and sanctuaries, May Crosses (crosses covered by flowers and embroidered shawls), patron saint’s days during summer, Moorish and Christian’s Party or the sailor procession of the Virgen del Carmen to bless the sea.
