In the heart of some of Andalucía’s most spectacular scenery in Axarquia lies Lake Viñuela, a man-made reservoir which aswell as serving the useful purpose of providing thousands of homes with water, in an aesthetic sense the lake has become a determinate part of the local landscape.
Thankfully, as the lake is a reservoir, no motorised craft are allowed, just simple sailing boats and canoes sometimes disturb the usual flat calm of the surface. Scattered around the southern end of the lake are picnic areas, each table complimented by a barbeque and all with fantastic views of the lake and mountains behind.
Fishing the man made lakes of Andalucia is very popular and they are in the main very well stocked with Carp, Trout and Bass. Apart from Lake Vinuela there are many other lakes within easy driving distance in the province.
There are also some very good Angling rivers. The Rio Frio is one such river, which lies mid way between Granada and Malaga in the foothills of the Sierra de Loja mountains. The Frio is well stocked with brown trout.
The office of tourism in Andalucia 'Turismo Andaluz' have produced a first class information pamphlet to help visiting fishermen - the booklet is called "Sports Fishing" and can be picked up from almost any tourist information office.
An angling licence can be purchased in Spain from any branch of the Caja Rural and Caja Mar Banks. Often your local licence can be purchased from the local bar, which will be appointed by the fishing authority to issue these. This is the case at Lake Vinuela where a licence may be purchased at the restaurant on the Western shore.
